How is progress calculated on forms? What are there more questions answered than total available?

When is a question considered answered?

We consider a question to be answered if...

  1. The question is a text input, text area, email, or phone, and it has a value.

  2. The question is a checkbox or multiple risk data select and has at least one option selected or checked.

  3. The question is a radio, dropdown, or risk data select and has an option selected.

  4. The question is an upload type and has at least one file attached.

  5. The question is a group or table and has at least one child question within it answered.

  6. The question is is marked as Not Applicable.

Total available questions

Total available questions is the denominator of the form progress meter. i.e. in the screenshot, it is 40.

  1. A question counts towards the total available if the question is visible i.e. we don't count children or grandchildren of conditional questions, unless the parent has been answered.

  2. We don't count headers, paragraphs, or labels towards the total available questions.

  3. For end customers/insureds: if an end customer is assigned a subset of questions on a form (as opposed to the entire form), the total available questions will be equal to how many visible questions are assigned to them.

Answer count

The answer count is the numerator of the forms progress meter. i.e. in the screenshot it is 46. Here's how we tally the answers:

  1. When any of the six conditions mentioned above are met, we add 1 to the tally.

  2. When a form has a repeating group question (i.e. Add Another), for each repeating question that exceeds the form default, we add 1 to the tally, but not to the total question count. For example, the ACORD 127 has 3 repeating groups questions: Driver Information, Additional Interest, and Vehicle Details.

    1. In the screenshot example, I have 3 drivers, 2 additional interests, and 4 vehicles. They all count towards the answer tally: 9 answers.

    2. However, only 1 of each question counts towards the total questions: 1 driver, 1 additional interest, and 1 vehicle, for a total of 3 possible questions.

    3. 9 answers - 6 questions = 6 overflow questions (as described in the tooltip)

  3. We take the stance of the PDF being the authoritative source of truth. This is why we don't allow the total available questions to exceed the question count on the PDF. That's how it's possible to end up with an answer count greater than the question count: we tally the repeating questions and overflow questions separately.
